Explore Principles and AI Intiatives

Leveraging AI responsibly for sustainable development is an opportunity that cannot be missed. Safe, secure, and trustworthy AI offers significant benefits to society, the economy, and the planet.

Yet, emerging risks with regards to AI require us to act decisively. AI can exacerbate existing social inequalities and create new ones, support proliferation of disinformation, have adverse climate and environmental impact. Its potential is also hindered by geopolitical concentration and market structures that create over-dependency, particularly in emerging societies.

We must all come together to create a more inclusive and equitable technological landscape, so as to turn AI into a positive force for people and our planet, one that advances international sustainable development. To ensure that AI will be a force for prosperity, sustainability, and inclusion, a set of key, overarching principles should guide our actions. We recognize that the initiatives and commitments we have made are cross-cutting and may also apply across other principles.

The five key areas of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development – People, Prosperity, Planet, Peace and Partnership – can provide focus and orientation.
